چکیده
The thermosphere model is a global three-dimensional time-dependent general circulation model. The details of the model have been described by Ref 4. We will limit our discussion here to features unique to this study, and general points that will be useful in the discussion that follows. First we describe the symmetry assumptions, boundary conditions and physical parameters of the model, before moving on to briefly describe the calculations that it performs.

Benzene and Haze Formation in the Polar Atmosphere of Jupiter
[1] Jupiter has a large magnetosphere that episodically precipitates large amounts of energy into the polar atmosphere, giving rise to intense auroras [Clarke et al., 1996; Grodent et al., 2000]. An important consequence of this energy influx is the production of a dark haze [Pryor and Hord, 1991], the formation mechanism of which was hitherto poorly known. Recent observations of benzene on Jup...
متن کاملEddy Mixing Coefficient On
Data on the composition and thermal structure, and the Lyman-alpha dayglow of Saturn when analyzed in conjunction with photochemical models of the hydrocarbons and the atomic hydrogen g reduction yield the homopause value of the eddy diffusion coefficient to be approximately 10 cm2 s-l. The equatorial value of the eddy diffusion coefficient at the homopause of Saturn is thus found to be approxi...
متن کاملNorth Atlantic climate variability in coupled models and data
We show that the observed zonally averaged jet in the Northern Hemisphere atmosphere exhibits two spatial patterns with broadband variability in the decadal and inter-decadal range; these patterns are consistent with an important role of local, mid-latitude ocean–atmosphere coupling. A key aspect of this behaviour is the fundamentally nonlinear bi-stability of the atmospheric jet’s latitudinal ...
متن کاملResponse of the Middle Atmosphere to CO2 Doubling: Results from the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model
The Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM) has been used to examine the middle atmosphere response to CO2 doubling. The radiative-photochemical response induced by doubling CO2 alone and the response produced by changes in prescribed SSTs are found to be approximately additive, with the former effect dominating throughout the middle atmosphere. The paper discusses the overall response, with em...
متن کاملUpper Atmosphere and Ionosphere of Saturn
This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Saturn. We summarize the available observations and the various relevant models associated with these regions. We describe what is currently known, outline any controversies and indicate how future observations can help in advancing our understanding of the various controlling physical and chemical proce...
